Exploring some other techniques we had a go at doing some paper weaving. Keeping the design it's self simple was good. The weaving worked really well with the light. It made a really nice interesting shade with how the light seeped through the lines. We added some scored leaf like shapes just to add a more decorative element to it.

This blog is to display my journey through a year of foundation art & design. I'm currently doing the foundation degree at Chesterfield College and these posts all show my exploration, research, ideas and more.

3D Design - Lamps
LAMP SHADES
This is our first idea. Each layer is made from a cardboard circle and partially cut into 1/8 and folded back to create the flicky looking petal like shapes. Using repetition for this really was effective. The idea was simple, yet repeated made it a bit more complex. Attaching each layer with "paper thread". We made each layer smaller each time to create this tunnel like effect and also makes it look quite chandelier like, which I really like. I think it sort of has the look of a chinese lantern or something. Some problems that occurred along the way was issues with where to place each thread, as you can see the lamp sort of leans to the left because the thread wasn't aligned as well as it could have been.

ARTIMIDE
When researching designers I came across this design in an icon magazine from an artimide collection. The shade itself is called "Pirce". I really like the simplicity of this design. It's use of repetition and also simple shapes yet it looks really effective, modern and quite elegant. When designing our own lamp shades I found this inspiring and it gave me some good ideas of how to go about it.
3D Design - Observational
We then changed media and had a go at doing our observational drawing using ink instead. Picking different objects as well. As you can see there was several testers at the side of the page exploring the media itself and it's limitations and how you could work with it. I found using ink really interesting because it gave you chance to be a bit more confident with the drawing. Increasing the scale and being stronger and bolder with the strokes. I think it really helped with exploring the object because you began to look and tones and surfaces. How many you could great a shiny reflection using the ink or texture, or even just shadow to portray the 3D element to the drawing.
Week 2 3D DESIGN
The first day of 3D we did observational drawings of random objects that we were not particularly familiar with. I picked this cog object. I thought it would be a challenge, with the several ellipses, the diagonally shaped ridges, the other grooves etc and that drawing it from different angles are just as challenging. I first began drawing the entire object all at once, trying to get it perfect straight away (Drawing in the top right corner) I soon realised this was a lot more challenging than I first thought and I wasn't going about it in the right way. I then began to break the object down a bit. Focus primarily on a certain sections and then try and piece it together once I was familier on how to draw each part. Such as the close ups on the ridges themselves, I was working out how they were shaped individually and how I could make it easier to draw the several ridges instead of drawing them all individually and not being as accurate. (The bottom middle drawing is an example of how I did this).
